Why doesn't this site have an annoying cookie notice?

Cookies are little bits of information stored in your browser. They are set by the sites you visit. Some cookies are necessary and innocent—for example, if you close a popup or banner announcement, the site might set a cookie to remember not to show it to you again for a while. These cookies don't need a cookie notice, because they're anonymous and necessary for you to use the site.

Other cookies are optional but functionally necessary, like the cookies set by a site when you log in and want the site to remember you next time. Sometimes, these cookies need a cookie notice, but the cookie is only used on that site.

Many sites use analytics or marketing tracking software to see what you do on their website. While this kind of information is really helpful to make design and strategy decisions, sometimes the software can overreach and track more than they need. Some big-name analytics software sets cookies that persist across sites, which means that they can track their behavior all across the web, including on searches and on social media. These cookies always need a cookie notice.

Many sites that set these kinds of cookies don't realize how invasive they are being, and often don't have access to that data—it is usually hoarded and sold by the parent company for what's called "marketing retargeting", which is how you can search for something and then your cousin gets an ad for the same product. Creepy.

We don't do that at Lucid Fox. Our analytics are from Plausible, a privacy-friendly and minimal alternative to the big names.
